Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist

Job Summary: The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist is responsible for the day-to-day environmental, health and safety functions at West Coast Energy Systems. This includes, but is not limited to, implementing the organization’s safety program, working with personnel to maintain a safe and healthy work environment, monitoring the facility and processes for adherence to Federal and State OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other local regulations and guidelines. Additionally, this role is responsible for the elimination of industrial incidents, conducting environmental monitoring and reporting, providing assistance with environmental permit applications, and assisting with internal EHS audits for the facility. This position works closely with cross-functional teams throughout the facility and leads the pursuit of zero incidents.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience;
- Ability to obtain OSHA 30 card within 30 days.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Regulatory Compliance Monitoring and Reporting
- Serve as the primary hazardous waste SME, coordinating all aspects of pollution control, RCRA and state-only hazardous waste management, leading efforts to reduce hazardous waste and implement recycling programs and other sustainable practices
- Direct industrial hygiene sampling and support.
- Manage the facility EHS program.
- Manage and perform the planning, training, inspection, reporting and recordkeeping requirements for all environmental and safety compliance programs.
- Maintain third-party compliance dashboards for ISNetworld, Avetta, PEC and Brownz.
- Support the EHS Manger on internal auditor for multi-site EHS activities;
- As an EHS SME, lead regional training efforts for EHS-related activities under the directive of the EHS Manager
- Provide engaging environmental, health, and safety leadership to the facility employees;
Worksite Analysis
- Conduct facility audits to be used to ensure that consistent, best-in-class results and compliance are followed to enable operational excellence. Prepare reports of findings with recommendations for corrective action.
- Conduct and document monthly facility inspections of hazardous waste accumulation/chemical storage areas.
- Perform Job Safety Analysis of all facility worksite activities and lead actions for controls and countermeasures.
- Work with EHS Managers supporting the EHS Manager and cross-functional teams for new projects and process development.
- All of the above-mentioned duties with a multi-site scope.
Hazard Prevention and Control
- Perform ergonomic and safety risk assessments virtually or hands-on for product and process capability.
- Lead the identification, assessment and resolution of ergonomic issues, including physical part validation of acceptability to ergonomic standards.
- Observe workers to determine proper use of prescribed safety equipment and procedures. Train and demonstrate proper use of safety equipment.
- Investigate incidents (including injuries, property damage, near misses, releases, and losses) to determine root causes and prepare/directs corrective and preventive action plans.
- Lead and coach incident investigations to determine root cause and preventative actions.
- Act as multi-site SME supporting facility EHS Specialists with hazard assessments.
- Support the EHS Manager to lead emergency action plan programs.
- Lead Employee Safety Committees;

Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist
Shelton, CT
Job Summary: The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist is responsible for the day-to-day environmental, health and safety functions at West Coast Energy Systems. This includes, but is not limited to, implementing the organization’s safety program, working with personnel to maintain a safe and healthy work environment, monitoring the facility and processes for adherence to Federal and State OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other local regulations and guidelines. Additionally, this role is responsible for the elimination of industrial incidents, conducting environmental monitoring and reporting, providing assistance with environmental permit applications, and assisting with internal EHS audits for the facility. This position works closely with cross-functional teams throughout the facility and leads the pursuit of zero incidents.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience;
- Ability to obtain OSHA 30 card within 30 days.
- Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid Certification within 30 days.
- Be familiar with 40 CFR regulations, including RCRA, CAA, CWA, OPA, EPCRA, TSCA
- 5 years of experience implementing occupational safety and environmental programs;
- 3 years of experience working in a multi-site manufacturing or industrial environment;
Preferred Qualifications:
- Degree in occupational safety, engineering or science related.
- Experience within a corporate safety role in a manufacturing company;
- Implementation experience with safety-related programs (ISO, VPP, etc.);
- Previous experience using SAP or equivalent ERP.
- OSHA 30 Card.
- CPR/First Aid Certification.
- CHMM, CSP, CIH, PE or equivalent Certification preferred
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Regulatory Compliance Monitoring and Reporting
- Serve as the primary hazardous waste SME, coordinating all aspects of pollution control, RCRA and state-only hazardous waste management, leading efforts to reduce hazardous waste and implement recycling programs and other sustainable practices
- Direct industrial hygiene sampling and support.
- Manage the facility EHS program.
- Manage and perform the planning, training, inspection, reporting and recordkeeping requirements for all environmental and safety compliance programs.
- Maintain third-party compliance dashboards for ISNetworld, Avetta, PEC and Brownz.
- Support the EHS Manger on internal auditor for multi-site EHS activities;
- As an EHS SME, lead regional training efforts for EHS-related activities under the directive of the EHS Manager
- Provide engaging environmental, health, and safety leadership to the facility employees;
Worksite Analysis
- Conduct facility audits to be used to ensure that consistent, best-in-class results and compliance are followed to enable operational excellence. Prepare reports of findings with recommendations for corrective action.
- Conduct and document monthly facility inspections of hazardous waste accumulation/chemical storage areas.
- Perform Job Safety Analysis of all facility worksite activities and lead actions for controls and countermeasures.
- Work with EHS Managers supporting the EHS Manager and cross-functional teams for new projects and process development.
- All of the above-mentioned duties with a multi-site scope.
Hazard Prevention and Control
- Perform ergonomic and safety risk assessments virtually or hands-on for product and process capability.
- Lead the identification, assessment and resolution of ergonomic issues, including physical part validation of acceptability to ergonomic standards.
- Observe workers to determine proper use of prescribed safety equipment and procedures. Train and demonstrate proper use of safety equipment.
- Investigate incidents (including injuries, property damage, near misses, releases, and losses) to determine root causes and prepare/directs corrective and preventive action plans.
- Lead and coach incident investigations to determine root cause and preventative actions.
- Act as multi-site SME supporting facility EHS Specialists with hazard assessments.
- Support the EHS Manager to lead emergency action plan programs.
- Lead Employee Safety Committees;
- Develop and support strategic initiatives designed to produce best-in-class EHS performance.
- Act as the facility champion for the EHS Drive to Zero programs.
- Act as the Corporate champion for the EHS Drive to Zero programs;
- Serve as SME for EHS for multiple sites.
Other Duties as assigned and the following:
- Minimize waste by driving initiatives surrounding reduction, recycling and supply chain partnerships;

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated understanding of OSHA, EPA, DOT and local regulations.
- Demonstrated understanding of MA, CT, NY, PA, NH, VT, ME and MI and specific regulations for environmental and safety
- Proven knowledge of safety equipment and standards.
- Demonstrated ability to influence management, teams and individuals across multiple functions within the organization;
- Excellent working knowledge of ergonomic analysis tools;
- Excellent working knowledge of emergency action planning;
- Proven track record of successfully managing shifting deadlines and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills;
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear; and use hands to manipulate objects or controls. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. On occasion the incumbent may be required to stoop, bend or reach above the shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific conditions of this job are typical of frequent and continuous computer-based work requiring periods of sitting, close vision and ability to adjust focus. 30% + travel expectations.
