How to Avoid Generator Installation Pitfalls: A Technical Guide

Generac Industrial Power provides installation guidelines to help customers understand the general requirements for optimal operation of their engine generator set. These guidelines are not intended to replace or supersede any local, state, or federal codes and standards. Always consult your local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for the specific codes that apply in your area.

Important: Installation and initial startup of this equipment is not a do-it-yourself project. It must be performed by an authorized service dealer or other qualified, competent contractor. Initial startup must also be performed and documented by a factory-authorized service dealer.

For detailed information, refer to:

  • “Design Guide for Generac Industrial Spark Ignited Generators” (10000046207)
  • “Installation Guidelines for Stationary Industrial Generators” (Manual 046622)

General Installation Best Practices

  • Install the generator in a clean, dry area that is easily accessible for maintenance and repair.
  • Protect the unit from direct exposure to natural elements such as flooding or high winds.
  • For rooftop installations, the structure must be designed by a qualified engineer to handle structural and vibrational loads.
  • Maintain a minimum of 6 feet of clearance around all sides of the generator set.
  • Properly anchor the unit to the concrete pad or support structure.
  • If installed indoors, the generator room must be sized to provide the total required airflow (combustion + cooling).
  • Route radiator discharge and engine exhaust air outside the room. Use ductwork that prevents hot exhaust air from recirculating back to the intake.
  • Minimize bends in exhaust ductwork and use gradual sweeps when bends are necessary.

Technical Exhaust System Requirements

  • Use flanged exhaust pipes rated for at least 1,500°F, constructed of Schedule 40 black iron, steel, or equivalent material.
  • Install a flexible joint or exhaust bellows between the engine and rigid piping to allow for thermal expansion.
  • Support the catalytic converter and silencer externally — do not hang them from the engine.
  • Calculate exhaust backpressure and size piping accordingly to stay within the manufacturer’s acceptable range.
  • For open units with loose catalytic converters, follow the specific installation drawing for correct O₂ sensor placement.

Additional Recommendations

  • Do not install insulation blankets on exhaust manifolds or turbochargers.
  • Properly design the shore power circuit for all generator auxiliaries.
  • Ground the generator correctly.
  • Separate AC power wiring from DC and communication wiring (use separate conduits).

Critical Spark Ignited Generator Fuel Piping Requirements

  • The fuel line must be leak-free with adequate ventilation.
  • The fuel supply must meet consumption rates at 100% load and the pressure/volume requirements in the submittal documents.
  • Install a primary regulator between the utility gas supply and the generator inlet (minimum 10 feet away). Size it at 1.5× the required fuel flow.
  • Measure fuel pressure at the generator test port — both during cranking and at full load. Pressure drop should not exceed 2 inches water column.
  • Use black iron piping for Natural Gas and Vapor LPG. Use copper pipe for Liquid LPG (per industry standard).
  • Install a stainless steel braided flexible hose between the rigid piping and the generator connection. The hose must be straight, perpendicular to the generator rail, with no kinks or bends.

Local fuel codes vary widely — always consult your local authority or dealer.

Conclusion

These guidelines are provided to help ensure reliable, long-term performance of your Generac generator set.
